KampalaTHE British government has defended the sale of armoured personnel carriers commonly known as mambas to Uganda, saying Kampala was not an embargoed destination. The British said the mambas have proven useful escorts to food convoys in war-torn northern Uganda.Oxfam, an international British charity organisation, first raised the matter in a strongly worded press release early this month. They claimed that Mr Tony Blair's government looked on as a S. African subsidiary of BAE, Britain's largest defence company, sold mambas to Uganda. They claimed the vehicles were heavily deployed "to violently quash opposition demonstrations" in the run-up to February 23 general elections."Since 2002, at least 32 armoured vehicles have been sold to Uganda by Land Systems OMC, a BAE subsidiary," Oxfam said."The most recent delivery of 12 vehicles was completed shortly before the elections." The matter came up on the floor of the House of Commons on Monday, when the Conservative MP for Buckingham, Mr John Bercow, asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he had made of the reports._______________________________________________
