Local Protestors Fight For Peace In Uganda

(CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA Hundreds of protestors spent the night on Independence Mall.

It’s part of a global effort to raise awareness about the civil war crisis in Uganda.

Children in the East Africa nation were photographed by the activist group “invisible children”, to document and show people what is going on in this country.

“They’re afraid of being abducted by the rebel army and being put into the army, and killing people. So they have to go to one meeting place every night and walk two hours just to be safe,” explained protestor Michelle Bivens.

Many children flee to the cities, in hopes of escaping this.

Overnight, protestors put their thoughts down on paper.

“We probably sent thousands of letters last night to our senators, to President Bush,” said Lous Cassis of Chester County, PA.

All of the activists hope these letters will push the U.S. Government to set aside financial aid to Uganda, to help bring peace to their country.

“We just gotta give our time, give our money, gotta give what we think we can do for these kids,” said Cassis.
