Kigali The Danish government early yesterday arrested
Sylvaire Ahorugeze, the
former Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority, on genocide charges. The arrest is a result of months of investigation into the case by Danish investigators.Ahorugeze, who sought refuge in the Scandinavian country after the genocide, is accused of having participated in the killings that took place in Kigali city. "I have just received a phone call from Denmark
telling me that the man has
just been arrested in Copenhagen, Denmark in connection with his role in genocide and he is to appear in court this afternoon," Emmanuel Rukangira, the coordinator of genocide suspects' tracking team said yesterday. He said that since earlier this year, various
delegations from both Danish
prosecution and police including assistant prosecutor general of Denmark, Plum Lans Nunk, had visited Rwanda to gather evidence against the suspect. He said another team from Danish forensic
department took DNA tests on dead
bodies exhumed in a pit in Gikondo, a Kigali city suburb, one of the areas Ahorugeze is suspected to have committed atrocities. Asked on the possibility of extraditing the suspect
to Rwanda, Rukangira
said the national prosecution would submit the request but hastened to add that it was unlikely for him to be transferred. "These people have already finished carrying out
their investigations and it
is very likely for them to have him tried there as in their provisions, genocide is tried and they have shown the willingness to deliver justice," Rukangira, who also doubles as a prosecutor with national competence, said. Habyarimana, the wife of former president Juvenal Habyarimana. Habyarimana died in a plane clash near Kigali International Airport on April 6, 1994, hours before the beginning of the massive atrocities. Ahorugeze is one of the people whose names appear
on a recently published
list of wanted genocide suspects. The arrest comes in the wake of a fresh standoff
between the Rwandan
government and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), over the controversial release of Counsel Callixte Gakwaya, who is also wanted by Kigali for allegedly committing genocide crimes. The Mulindwas Communication Group
