Troops arrested over Sudan deaths
map
Fifteen Sudanese soldiers have been arrested in connection with last week's killing of some 40 civilians near the southern capital, Juba.
Those arrested confessed to the killings, according to the authorities in south Sudan.
Last week's killings prompted the United Nations refugee agency to suspend its programme of repatriating refugees to south Sudan.
The attack also cast doubt on Ugandan peace talks, taking place in Juba.
Uganda's government and Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels had accused each other of responsibility for the attacks.
Major-General Wilson Deng Kuoirot said two of the soldiers had been killed during the arrests.
"My belief is they were pretending to be LRA to attack and loot civilians," said Gen Deng, who is a mediator in the Ugandan talks.

Talks aimed at ending the two-decade-old war in northern Uganda between the government and Lord's Resistance Army rebels are at risk of breakdown in the wake of renewed attacks on civilians by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.
At least 42 civilians were killed in a string of attacks in Southern Sudan last week. Officials of the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) said they did not know who was responsible for the attacks or the motives behind them.
South Sudan is hosting stop-start peace talks between the Uganda government and the LRA who have long been accused of committing atrocities against villagers across the two border regions. The Ugandan military pinned responsibility for the attacks on the LRA, which denied any involvement, in a blame game that has marred the talks aimed at ending 20 years of fighting in northern Uganda.
"This is the work of the LRA; they carried out three different attacks and killed 42 people. This is in total violation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement; the mediators must act," said Lt Chris Magezi, the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) spokesman for northern Uganda.
He said the rebels had used the peace talks to reorganise. "But we will not break the talks by fighting back; we shall only boost security for the internally displaced person," added Lt Magezi. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni is due to visit Juba this week in a bid to boost the faltering negotiations, according to government officials.
Though Uganda maintains that it will not resume hostilities against the rebels, the stands taken by the negotiating teams at Juba carry the risk of a total breakdown of the talks, which have been halted since September.

Both Uganda's military and the LRA have accused each other of breaking a landmark truce signed in August that aimed to end the two-decade-old war.
Rapidly unfolding event, particularly the reported killing of more than 40 civilians by LRA rebels and the impounding of an SPLA truck carrying food to the rebels by the UPDF, suggest that an outbreak of renewed hostilities is imminent.
State Minister for Defence Ruth Nankabirwa last week told journalists that the LRA were deliberately provoking the Uganda army.
