Sudan has until Jan. 1 to act on Darfur KHARTOUM, Sudan, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The
United States set a Jan. 1 deadline for Sudan to decide on expanded
international peacekeeping force in its Darfur region.
U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Andrew Natsios said if there is no agreement by
the deadline, the Bush administration will move on to "Plan B" whose details
were not specified, The Washington Post reported.
Speaking to reporters, Natsios declined several times to explain "Plan B,"
saying only that he was not making a threat. In the past, U.S. officials have
said besides sanctions, the Untied States could take action against top
Sudanese officials implicated in genocide in Darfur. The United States could
also impose a "no-fly zone" to deter the Sudanese military from attacking
civilians, the report said.
Sudan has refused to abide by a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for
a U.N.-led peacekeeping force. As a result the world body and the United States
have been trying to get Sudan to accept a combination of U.N. and African Union
troops.
Last week, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Sudan had agreed in
principle to such a joint force, the report said.
