Inside Kony’s cell at The Hague

JOSEPH Kony will broadly be surfing the Internet and watching television
programmes if he is ever arrested and taken to The Hague.

Daily Monitor has visited Kony’s cell which is located near the North Sea in
the heavily fortified and barricaded Dutch government prison of Scheveningen at
The Hague.
The Lord’s Resistance Army commander is among four suspects wanted by the
International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Kony, who denies the accusations, wants charges against him dropped as a
condition for any peace deal to be reached. The LRA and the government of
Uganda are currently negotiating a peace deal in the South Sudan town of Juba.
But the ICC has not wavered in its pursuit for justice. A prison cell has been
made ready and is among the first 12 built for the eight suspects for whom the
ICC has issued indictments. The cell is fully furnished with almost everything
the rebel leaders could have missed in their lifetime.
The residential wing of the cells where Kony and other suspects will be
accomodated.
These include: Internet facilities, an indoor gym with access to a football,
basketball and lawn tennis courts and a punching bag. There is also a
well-equipped kitchen with a microwave, fridge as well as bath and washrooms
with a white-tiled overhead sprinkler shower and washing machines.
Head of the ICC Defence Councils Didier said Kony is entitled to respect until
proven guilty.
"This is an international court and our detention centres have to be of
international standards using guidelines of the International Committee of the
Red Cross (ICRC)," Mr Didier said in an interview at the ICC yesterday. The
suspects are also entitled to family visits and conjugal rights.
Kony and his colleagues will share the facility with those indicted for war
crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
Inside the standard cell
They will, however, be supervised by the ICC's own Director of Prisons and will
have no physical contact with those from the formaer Yugoslavia.
Currently, the only inmate at the ICC detention centre near the North Sea coast
is Thomas Lubanga from DR Congo, who is charged with war crimes for recruiting
child soldiers and former Liberian President Charles Taylor.
Sources at the ICC told Daily Monitor that Mr Lubanga had filed a complaint
saying his cell was secluded
Mr Taylor has also reportedly complained about the absence of African
Television programmes on his set and the imposed Dutch food in the prison.

humanity and 21 counts for war crimes. His deputy, Otti, is named in 11 counts
for crimes against humanity and 21 counts for war crimes. Alleged crimes
include rape, murder, enslavement, sexual enslavement and forced enlisting of
children". ICC must not withdraw its indictments.
