Husbands must start paying their housewives salaries for the work
they do at home, Masindi woman MP, Jalia Bintu, has said.

"Housewives wake up early in the morning make breakfast for the
family. Cook, wash, carry a pregnancy for nine months and perform
other extra duties an night. If you (men) can pay house maids why not
house wives?" Ms Bintu wondered.

Ms Bintu says housewives are being cheated by their spouses by not
paying for their labour. She says men have deliberately refused to
pay for work done by their wives because they fear expenses that come
with it.

She was speaking at a hunger women campaign day in Masindi District
on Friday, which was attended by members of Parliament and district
officials.

According to Ms Bintu, in Denmark pregnant women are paid to maintain
their unborn child in the womb. She recommended that the same
initiative be undertaken in Uganda.

The function was part of the Hunger-free campaign being championed by
Actionaid International. Several rallies have been held in Kalangala,
Masindi, Lira, Soroti and Katakwi districts. Other rallies are to be
held in Kumi and Mbale, with the aim of collecting views on how to
end hunger.

The views are expected to be presented to President Museveni during
the World Food Day celebrations on Thursday.

The Director of Programmes at Actionaid, Ms Spociazo Kiwanuka, said
40 per cent of infant mortality is due to malnutrition.

She said poor feeding habits have been due to women having limited
control over land to grow food crops to feed their children. She
urged the government to ensure that women have control over land.

Ms Bintu advised women to ensure that their names appear on the land
title with that of their husbands whenever they buy land.
