Morbidly obese Quebec prisoner gets a lighter sentence
MONTREAL (CBC) - An inmate in a Montreal prison is getting out of jail early
because of his morbid obesity.
Michel Lapointe, 37, was granted a six-month reduction of his sentence to
compensate for what the parole board described as the "inconveniences" he
endured because of his heavy weight.
Lapointe was released from prison Tuesday night, the Quebec parole board said.
The Quebec man, known as "Big Mike," weighs more than 400 pounds.
He was sentenced to 25 months in jail for drug trafficking charges, a sentence
he was serving at the Bordeaux Jail in Montreal.
The board's decision to grant him early leave is exceptional given his crime,
said Lapointe's lawyer Clemente Monterosso.
Lapointe pleaded guilty to a count of gangsterism, which normally requires
prisoners to serve at least 50 per cent of their sentence. His parole requires
him to find a job and avoid bars and people with criminal records.
Two halfway houses have already refused to take in "Big Mike," because their
facilities could not accommodate his wide girth.
After being released, Lapointe told newspaper Le Journal de Montréal that he
was looking forward to reuniting with his wife. He vowed to never return to
jail again.
