THE International Community of the Banyakigezi (ICOB) will hold their first
international convention and homecoming in December. The ICOB, which has
branches in Canada, USA and UK, will form its chapter in Kabale, Uganda this
month before its launch in December.

ICOB was formed to promote the culture and socio-economic development of the
people from Kigezi.

The organisation’s interim coordinator in Uganda, Athanasius Rutaro, said a
meeting is to be held on September 12 to formalise the Uganda chapter and elect
the office-bearers before the launch.

He said this follows a meeting in February under the chairmanship of the Bank
of Uganda governor, Prof. Tumusiime Mutebile, to oversee the preparations for
the convention.

Kigezi was one of Uganda’s smallest of the original 13 districts in the 1960s.

According to a concept note issued on Monday, ICOB has established an
information and communication technology centre in Rukungiri Technical
Institute. It has also set up a centre for excellence at Nyakatare Technical
Institute in Kanungu district.

Rutaro said in 2007, the organisation got sh7m from a Canadian-based support
organisation and from members of the various chapters abroad, to establish
support programmes like that for the blind at Kisoro Demonstration School.

The organisation was preceded by a series of meetings which were first held in
Uganda in 2001. Over the years, the members have held conventions in Toronto,
Washington DC, London, Denver, New York and Las Vegas.

The conventions are partly used to mobilise members and fundraise for community
assistance.
