*We should promote what unites Ugandans for sustainable peace*

*Kabaka Ronald M. Mutebi II*
I am delighted to [speak] to all our people today. We have two pertinent
concerns. They are not new; and I would like to reiterate them here, because
they are overwhelmingly important.

First is unity amongst us and then development [that go] hand in hand. But
before I proceed to articulate on these two issues, it is important to
revisit the history of this county, Buwekula. This area, Mubende where the
county is located is of significant importance to the Kingdom of Buganda,
and to the many leaders from neighbouring regions who used to come to the
Priestess of Nakayima to perform traditional rituals here.

That stresses the importance of this county; and exemplifies that all of us
are one in unity. I would therefore urge all Ugandans, together, to promote
what unites us as a common good, instead of encouraging what divides us.

Our Ugandan Constitution stipulates that all Ugandans have the right to move
and settle wherever they choose to in Uganda. But, that does not necessarily
mean that they can choose to settle wherever as if it’s an abandoned house
with no owner at all.

It’s therefore important that wherever Ugandans choose to settle to live in
Uganda, they should be in harmony and coexistence. That level of harmony
translates into sustainable peace.

In this era, we are not ready to go back into hostilities and bloodletting
which our forefathers fought, right from the 16th century. We cherish the
unity of Ugandans, and we must not reignite historical hostilities, which
our forefathers fought to an end.

It’s now 47 years since we got independence. But all this time, our nation
has spent time almost in quarrels. This has kept Uganda backward.

This is now the time to stop the quarrels for all [Ugandans] to be free in
their country, without anyone blocking their basic rights. It is now the
time for our people, from various religious orientations and traditions to
unite as the saying: “agali wamu gegaluma enyama” (United we stand).

Our people in Buwekula County, we encourage you to grow enough food for your
households and for income generation. We are desirous of you adopting rain
water harvesting technologies by constructing valley dams and appropriate
run-off catchment points for use during dry spells.

We encourage you to do whatever you can to plant trees. It is very important
that every time a tree is cut, another one be planted.
We strongly encourage you to know that land is synonymous with gold and
silver.
Thank you for your attention.
