Thanks. This would not happen to a new chopper. Any car, bus, tractor, gets
'loose' with age. You start to hear some noises you never heard before when it
was new. A chopper is one of the most violent rides ever (even with two
rotors.. it is still one noise bone-rattling ride). The driver of the chopper
should have eased off the throttle and tried again to re-lift off. Choppers
would always pass through this destructive frequency as it ramps up its engine
power. The good thing is, you do not stay at this frequency for long and you
transition to a less destructive frequency of vibration. This chopper just
stayed at this frequency for just too long.

And this might sound a stupid question, is there steps we can take to prevent
it from happening? Was there a human error somewhere? For with the explanation
you have given out, I am simply scared to sit in a Heli.
By the way thank you for throwing a light on it for it simply baffled me when I
read it.

A rare but remarkable action of synchronization. As it was on the ground, the
rotors generated a specific vibrational frequency that synchronized with the
general frequency of vibration of the whole chopper. Same thing would happen
if an army tries to march in formation over a bridge. You can easily bring the
bridge down by generating this unique frequency that is cooperative which keeps
getting enhanced. We use that in chemical dynamics all the time: a specific
unique frequency can generate a reaction (destruction of the chopper), while
several other frequencies are incommensurate and lead to nothing other than the
noise the chopper makes. If the chopper was not sitting on the ground, it
would not have disintegrated because it would wobble and not give any series of
frequencies any cooperativity.
