Friends
As we raise the issues of concern in our countrys future, this morning I am
raising a concern about the medical establishment that has not yet struck
the country, but this is a purely future worry that we must watch out
today. Every country including Uganda was built on the strength of medical
records. As we were growing up we had a medical record in hospitals and
clinics. These records were not structured out for fun but because it is
important to follow a persons body, to know what it has taken and what it
has been treated with. Bodies are like machines, they function well only if
cared for well. But bodies as they fight diseases they hold a certain
strength which requires a certain strength of medications to be able to
fight off the disease.
When the movement came to power, hospitals and clinics were destroyed so as
the records as well. Every grand ma and grand pa became a village doctor,
with needles pocking out of the bed rooms. And this very terrible habit has
been feeding on Ugandans in Diaspora especially in The North and East who
have been sending medication into the country to their families. So and so
has a fever send him to Mrs. so and so and she gives him a needle. Needles
in Uganda villages are literary boiled on a stove and kaboom into the human
being. There are homes in Uganda that even offer HIV cocktails, which is
troubling for even in countries like this one, one to be on that cocktail
needs a very regular blood work to know exactly what the medication is
doing, but in Uganda they simply pack it into the bodies. Uganda needs to
stop the needle culture, it is wrong and it needs to be checked out. It
amazes me that in my entire life in this country I have not seen my child
taking a needle except for immunization purpose, but in Uganda parents
actually feel un unsatisfied if a child is not needled up. I fail to get
that culture. Most of Veterinary officers in villages today are treating
human beings as well, unlicensed to treat people but they do any ways.
But the larger problem into all this is that no one knows exactly what
treatment has been given to whoever. So you are ending up with 36 million
people walking with un known treatment, well except those like Ssabassajja
that have a right to fly to UK when they get a first sneeze of course. But I
am talking of the larger society that moves on a daily bread. The problem
you are going to get is that an epidemic is going to strike Uganda one of
those days, and you will not be able to know how to fight it, for a good
reason that you have no idea what the person in front of you has been taking
in past years. You have no record of medications no record of injections and
no record on his body strength. And since treatment in Uganda is based on
how much you can cough up, you do not have bodies that are uniform so you
cannot use a uniform treatment. By the time you will figure all that one
out, you are going to have a whole lot of dead people on your hands. And
given the numbers of people you have especially in urban centers, given the
fact that Ugandans are dirty and cities are dirty, getting an epidemic in
that country is as easy as taking off a switch. It is as simple as that.
May Dr Edward Kayondo and Dr Owor Kipenji pick up from there for this is
just a red flag from a man without medical history.
