CameroonPostline.com <http://www.cameroonpostline.com/> -- The Minister of
Public Health, Andre Mama Fouda, on October 19, 2012, fired four mortuary
attendants at the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala for peddling human parts.
Interestingly, the Chief Mortuary Attendant, Jean Claude Eugene Nogock aka
Pharahon, who recently exposed the human parts business was also fired.

Mama Fouda, Health Minister

Pharahon said that mortuary attendants who are involved in trafficking body
parts operate in collaboration with some highly placed persons at the
hospital. He said most persons who buy the human organs are members of
sects. The Minister, during a visit to the Laquintinie Hospital on October
17, had warned against malpractices by hospital personnel, and said it is
good thing when personnel denounce malpractices by colleagues.

The Public Health boss also admitted that he had been informed of cases of
“disrespect of deontology and ethical lapses in some aspects.” The Minister
also sacked the head of the laboratory service because it was alleged that
the secret extraction of body parts in the hospital for trafficking, had
been taking place at the hospital’s laboratory and mortuary.

Mutilated Corpse

Meanwhile, the death of a student of the Douala University, Franck Ngueukam,
and the alleged mutilation of the corpse at the Laquintinie Hospital
mortuary, was what led to exposure of the trafficking of human parts.
Florence Magnigan, sister of the late student, told reporters that Ngueukam
was taken to the Laquintinie Hospital on August 21, 2012 but died a few days
later.

Magnigan said the family was convinced that Ngueukam’s death was not
natural, and suspected one of her aunts, simply referred to as Nicole, and
her husband, of having a hand in the death. She said when she went to the
hospital on August 30, in relation to the death of her brother, Pharahon
told her that the corpse had been tampered with at the mortuary. Pharahon
who corroborated the story to the press, said Nicole went to the mortuary on
August 29, and said she wanted hair from late Ngueukam’s head and some nails
from the toes.

The Chief Mortuary Attendant said he told the woman that he does not do such
nasty business.
Pharahon said when he reported for work the next morning, he examined
Ngeuekam’s corpse and discovered that some hair had been cut off from the
head and some nails had also been cut. He said his investigation revealed
that one his colleagues (names withheld) received FCFA 83.000 for the deal.

Pharahon said such malpractices were common at the Laquintinie Hospital and
that many families whose corpses are tampered with at the mortuary, do not
realise the acts when they go to remove the corpses. He said he had fought
single-handedly over the years to stop the malpractice in vain. He said for
example that a few days later in September, he entered the mortuary
unannounced one afternoon, and the same mortuary attendant was again
meddling with the corpse of Ngeuekam.

Pharahon said he sneaked back, called Magnigan and also alerted the hospital
authorities. The hospital authorities and Magnigan got to the mortuary and
found the said mortuary attendant had removed the corpse from the freezer
and placed it on the floor and was cutting it open with a knife. The
hospital authorities are said to have not taken any immediate sanction
against the mortuary attendant nor even called the police.

However, the family of late Ngeuekam filed a complaint to the State Counsel,
who ordered the authorities of the Laquintinie Hospital to make arrangement
for an autopsy to be conducted on the corpse. The Minister claimed that a
result of one of the autopsies showed that no organ was removed from the
corpse of Ngeuekam, adding that it would not be possible to conduct another
autopsy because “the corpse was no longer in a good state.”
