Kathleen Wynne, new cabinet to be sworn in Monday
Posted By: Siobhan Morris [email protected] · 2/10/2013 6:40:00 PM Kathleen Wynne makes it official Monday. The new Liberal party leader will be sworn is Premier in a ceremony at the Ontario legislature at 3pm. Wynne will become the province's 1st female leader & Canada's first openly gay premier. John Tory, host of The Live Drive <http://www.newstalk1010.com/Hosts/LiveDrivewithJohnTory.aspx> on Newstalk 1010 & former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, says the ceremony will go by quickly. Wynne's oath of office will last only 10 seconds since she has already been sworn in as an M-P-P. Tory says most people swear on a religious book from home, some sort of heirloom with members of their family watching on. The secretary to the cabinet will read the declaration in front of the Lieutenant Governor who will ultimately swear Wynne in. Despite a changing of the guard at Queen's Park, Tory says there isn't a lot pomp & circumstance surrounding the swearing-in. He says that's reserved for the throne speech, set to take place in a few weeks. While Wynne will have a chance to speak, Tory says she won't want to take away from the fact that she'll likely have a dramatically changed cabinet. THE CABINET Given the McGuinty government's ongoing dispute with the province's public teachers, Tory virtually guarantees a switch up in education ministers. The Canadian Press reports former school board trustee Liz Sandals will take over for Laurel Broten. Broten will stay in cabinet, but it isn't clear in what capacity. There are many holes to fill with Finance Minister Dwight Duncan & Energy Minister Chris Bentley giving up their seats later this week. Northern Development & Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci wants out of cabinet & won't run for re-election. Sources say Wynne's leadership rival Charles Sousa, a former banker, will become Finance Minister, while Bob Chiraelli will take over as Energy Minister. Deb Matthews is expected to stay on as Minister of Health & could also become deputy premier. Sources say former Glen Murray, who dropped out of the leadership race to support Wynne, will become Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure. Wynne has also promised to find cabinet posts for leadership rivals Eric Hoskins & Harinder Takhar. Wynne will serve as Minister of Agriculture for at least a year. Wynne reportedly started calling ministers Sunday afternoon to inform them of their new jobs, but Tory says the process has likely been going on for weeks. He says cabinet candidates have been going through rounds of interviews, filling out forms & with the party making sure they don't have any skeletons in their closets. Tory says in recent years that work has been done in a lawyer's office, with someone from the Premier's staff in the corner, watching over everything.
