2,600 teachers fail Grade III national examinations

*In Finland all teachers, even those for Primary one, must have six or
seven years of University Education. *

*Both Canada and South Korea have many PhD holders teaching in Primary
Schools.*

*This is the direction to go if we are to catch up with the Hong Kong, the
Singapore and the Taiwan of this world. And all except Canada are heavy on
coaching. There is nothing wrong with coaching, as we are told in Uganda.
Uganda is just using this claim to hide budgetary mismanagement.*

*So, these teaching jobs are good jobs. If you’ve an M Sc in Biology then
we want you as Head Teacher at Bugiri Primary School.*

* If you ve got an M A in Literature then we want you as Headmistress of
Masindi Girls P S so that you also help to establish a media Centre there.*

* If you have an M Sc in Chemistry then become the Head Teacher at Rakai PS
and help to build a Laboratory there.*

* *

*Indeed it is Teachers with such calibre that would, besides teaching, help
to do research and write the Text Books for Biology, Maths etc…………..*

*We these 100,000 teaching jobs to fill Uganda’s University graduates, and
the President, should not be complaining of un employment. *

*Teachers have posted poor results in the 2012 Grade III teachers’
examinations compared to the previous year, despite improved facilities and
retooling of tutors. *
* *

*According to the results released in Kampala yesterday, out of the 10,407
candidates who sat the exams, only six managed to score a distinction,
representing 0.06 per cent, compared to 90 of 2011. A total of 6,720 got
credits, 1,077 received passes and 2604 failed the course. A similar poor
performance was last recorded in 2009 where only five candidates scored a
distinction out of 9,172 who sat the exams.*

*Higher Education minister John Chrysostom Muyingo, who released the exams,
expressed concern over the poor performance, saying it casts a dark cloud
on the future of teacher education in the country. He challenged the
principals of teachers colleges to swiftly investigate what led to a
general decline in overall performance and report to the ministry. “There
is a need to carry out an investigation into the causes of this decline and
seek for credible solutions,” he said.*

*The minister noted that Grade III teachers are a critical backbone of the
education and fail to produce quality will impact negatively on entire
national education system. “…this explains why teacher training has been a
priority in the ongoing education reforms and there is no doubt that we
have invested much in construction of libraries ,laboratories, and
provision of science equipment and chemicals to the PTCs and also tutors
through various professional development programmes including the training
of science teachers ,” he said.*
* *

*Mr John Arinatwe, the chairperson of the Principals’ Association of
Uganda, blamed the poor performance on the poor attitude of teachers
trainees who he said do not take seriously some of the changes made in the
curriculum.
“ Since we have a revised curriculum, we think that could be one of the
contributing factors but we promise that we shall do whatever it takes
within our capacity so that they adjust to the changes ,” he said.*
* *

*Last year, the government changed the primary teachers’ education
curriculum and added three subjects - Agriculture, Kiswahili and Early
Childhood Development. Grade III teachers now offer 10 subjects from the
previous seven. *
* *

*Mr Godwin Acidri from Arua Core PTC emerged the best candidate after
obtaining aggregate 11 out of a possible six and an A in School Practice.*
