Name a liberator whose hands are bloodless.
The struggle to liberate entails painful sacrifices, both in lives and
resources. The British hunted down Ben Guron, Yitzhak Rabin and Simon Perez
as terrorists, even offering a bounty on their heads.
Less than two years later, these three were the founding fathers of a new
nation called Israel.
Up to his death, Yasser Arafat was hunted down by Israelis like a lion. Yet,
to millions around the world, Arafat was a hero and a liberator.
John Garang was the most wanted Sudanese for nearly two decades; today, he's
rightly considered the father of a new republic called Southern Sudan.
Jomo Kenyatta was jailed alongside Paul Ngei, Achieng Oneko, Bildad Kaggia
and others specifically for a murderous campaign to liberate Kenya from the
British rule. History vindicated them, and just last month, the British
government apologized for its atrocities against the Kenyans.
Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo led twin liberation movements that
masterminded sabotage and target assassinations against the white rule
before emerging victorious in April 1980 as prime minister and deputy PM of
a new republic called Zimbabwe.
Until four years ago, the Irish Republican Army was alternately called
terrorists and liberators, fighting off the British rule in Northern
Ireland. Today, Gerry Adams and IRA fighters are considered statesmen.
Examples along this line litter our recent history; Guetamala, Nicaragua,
Peru, Afghanistan and even Thomas Sankara's Burkina Faso.
Closer to home, take Oyite Ojok as an example: was he a killer or a
liberator? You can choose to see a liberation struggle through the eyes of
the loser, or you can choose to see it the way the victor sees it.
People like me who adore Mandela prefer to see him as a saviour and world
statesman; I think we who see him this way outnumber your clique.
