Kigali, Rwanda - Eighty-five soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic
Republic of Congo (FARDC) have crossed the border into Rwanda in their bid
to escape from advancing M23 rebel fighters, sources in the region reported,
quoting a senior UN Official, Richard Goldstone.
Goldstone said the 85 soldiers had been handed over to the UN High
Commissioner for Refugees.
Another report said Thursday that there was heavy fighting, involving the
regular army and M23 rebels, in several towns in the North-Kivu province
near the city of Goma, where the UN forces are on alert in a bid to keep the
rebels from re-taking that key city.
Eye witnesses said that the rebels seemed to have gained further ground in
several North-Kivu towns, adding that the situation was still tense in that
zone.
They said the local people are afraid of a resurgence of violence despite
the presence of UN forces.
