The entire East and Central African region has to pay close attention to
South Sudan. On Tuesday, President Salva Kiir took the drastic action of
sacking Vice-President Riek Machar as well as the entire Cabinet.

Mr Machar is a powerful figure, commanding the loyalty of a strong ethnic
base and a sizeable grouping within the military. He has also indicated he
will challenge the President come the 2015 elections.

President Kiir’s decision was therefore not just a drastic political move,
but also one with the potential to destabilise Africa’s newest nation still
grappling with the challenges of building governance institutions.

Any instability in the country would pose critical security and economic
challenges across the region.

It is therefore gratifying that Mr Machar has not challenged his removal,
and has indicated that he will limit his option to the legitimate political
arena.

Still, the situation needs close attention. Regional groupings such as the
East African Community and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development
must take the lead role on monitoring the situation; ready to lead any
mediation or intervention that may be required.
