DRC: M23 test a radio to "fight against disinformation" in Goma
The March 23 Movement (M23) testing a radio to "fight against
disinformation" in Goma, capital of the volatile province of North Kivu, in
eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, said Tuesday the president of policy
rebellion, Bertrand Bisimwa.
"It is one of our radios is being tested on the frequency 96.5 FM. This
radio is called Dignity FM, it is tested for three days, "told AFP Bertrand
Bisimwa.
This radio is designed to "fight against disinformation: some are now
calling our people to support the war, to take up arms against each other,
but we want to support the negotiations" initiated between the rebels and
the government in Kinshasa but stalled in Kampala, Uganda, he added.
A resident of Goma reached by telephone said that at present, the specified
frequency is emitted as music.
"Our program schedule will be fitted but logic dictates that we were going
to an opinion consistent with peace. There will be interviews with
celebrities and citizens who speak of peace. Can not pass that message of
peace, "said Bertrand Bisimwa.
A western source believes that the equipment used by the M23 was stolen,
that belies Mr. Bisimwa. "It is a material that we bought," he said.
The M23 has been active since 2012, but in North Kivu. After a lightning
offensive, he grabbed Goma he held for ten days in late November. It is
removed by pressing the states of the International Conference on the Great
Lakes Region (ICGLR), which had been promised in exchange including opening
a dialogue with Kinshasa.
These negotiations, laborious, were opened in early December in Kampala and
are now stalled. Finding that the government had not complied with the
agreement which has put its withdrawal from Goma, the M23 has threatened
Saturday to retake the city.
On Thursday, the UN Mission in the DRC has established a "safe area" which
includes Goma and its surroundings.
