Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe has been appointed vice president of the
African Union (AU) executive council.
The appointment was made at the AU assembly summit in Ethiopia.
The council is made up foreign affairs ministers designated by government
member states and meets twice a year in an ordinary fashion.
Mugabe will now lead an AU organ which is fighting the European Union to bar
him from an EU-Africa summit scheduled for April this year.
The EU will be attempting to bar Mugabe for the second time from attending
the summit. The first time was in Portugal in 2007 .
In Africa alone, 3.1 million lives has been saved from malaria.
Meanwhile, African countries were awarded the African Leaders Malaria
Alliance Award for excellence in malaria control interventions.
The seven countries, who received the awards, are Cape Verde, Madagascar,
Malawi, Namibia, Sao Tome and Principe, Swaziland and Rwanda.
The fight against malaria in the past decade has been phenomenal. In Africa
alone, 3.1 million lives has been saved from malaria.
This translates to 49% reduction in malaria mortality.
Presenting the awards president Armando Guebuza of Mozambique said these
countries have made significant progress in sustaining malaria
interventions.
