MEMO TO THE PEOPLE – Election Day in the US

Today November 4th, 2014 is midterm election day in the US. The full house
of Representatives and more than half of the Senate is up for re-election.
It is the day that the people will have their say in the democratic process
of their country. It is the day that the sovereign people exercise their
civic duty, as responsible citizens who want to be an active stake holders
and participants of their country. It is the day that the people will pass a
verdict and a judgment on their elected officials and hold them accountable.

Come election day in our own country, we, the people of Cameroun must
reflect before casting our vote. Our people must think hard, feel deep
before voting for someone. Because your vote has real consequences to your
life and the lives of your fellow citizens.

1- Don’t vote again for someone because he is of the same tribe as you
do. For if you do, you are faltering on the promise we make to the future
generation of our people.

2- Don’t vote again for that octogenarian Senator or Parliamentarian, or
President, Chief or Fon, who, even when he is well intended, may not relate
to the values and challenges of this new generation of our people, and may
not have the credentials necessary deliver on the promise and hope of the
people.

3- Don’t vote for that knuckle headed corrupt CPDM parliamentarian who
gave the Nkukuma President the blank check to run for yet another term in
office, even when the constitution forbad him to. Don’t vote for someone
because he is of your tribe or ethnic group.

4- Only vote for people who share your convictions and your aspirations.
People who empathize and sympathize with the challenges of this new
generation of our people. Only vote for someone because he has the moral
integrity, the good judgment and loves his country and people. Only vote for
people who will represent your views and will work tirelessly to make a
difference for the cause that you stand for. Only vote for people who have
dedicated themselves to what is right for our people. Vote for people who
stand for liberty, freedom, justice and dignity for all of our people –and
not just for some people--.

In this lies the true virtue, the greatness and generosity of a people. A
people who look after one another, feel for one another, help out one
another irrespective of tribes, ethnicity or lingual origins. We, as a
people must always stand up for is right and just for all of our people. We
must transcend our tribal and ethnic division and always work to seek
justice and freedom for all of our people.

Always remember that the Colonial Master who has enslaved you sees you all
as one. When they steal your resources, they do so to all of you. They don’t
distinguish the Bamileke from the Haoussa, the Beti from the Bassa. So
united as one people, we stand stronger. Divided in small meaningless and
weak tribes, we expose our people and country to more exploitation and
enslavement.
