Two people were injured following explosions at a road construction site
Wednesday morning near Rhamu bridge in Mandera.

Confirming the incident, Mr Feysal Abdinoor a member of the county assembly
representing Mandera Town, said the first explosion occurred at the
construction site, causing extensive damage to a road grader.

Reports indicated that those injured were the driver of the grader and a
worker.

The MCA, who was among the first people at the scene, said the second blast
happened minutes after police and local leaders arrived at the scene but
said there were no injuries.

Rhamu Ward representative Issack Dahir, who also spoke to Nation.co.ke,
confirmed the incident, saying the explosion happened at the same spot where
Governor Ali Roba’s convoy was targeted last month in another attack.

“Security officers should do through investigations to establish why this
place has been prone to attacks recently,” he said

SECURITY OPERATION LAUNCHED

Following the early morning attack, security officers embarked on a massive
security operation on the two-kilometre stretch of road under construction
to look for more possible unexploded improvised devices that could be buried
under the road.

Mandera Town has experienced numerous blasts, especially on the busy
Rhamu-Mandera road that passes through the centre of the border town.

The road is usually busy and is currently under construction by the county
government.

On October 15, 2014, Mandera Governor Ali Ibrahim Roba escaped unhurt in an
attack on his motorcade after a powerful device exploded as his motorcade
passed.

EARLIER ATTACKS
Earlier, in April 2014, unknown armed men shelled the Mandera County
government offices, causing extensive damage on one side of the building.

The unidentified heavily armed attackers fired several powerful
mortar-propelled grenades at the county offices, but nobody was hurt in the
incident since it was early in the day and none of the workers had reported
for work at the time of the shelling.

An on Thursday last week an improvised explosive device went off in Mandera
Town, damaging a private car.

The explosive had been planted on the roadside about 200 meters from the
Rhamu bus stop, where Governor Roba’s convoy was.
