New home sought for Rwanda genocide acquitted

Dar es Salaam: Tanzania on Saturday urged foreign governments to offer
asylum to those acquitted of charges related to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda
and those released after serving prison terms.

The country hosts the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), but
the court is scheduled to close at the end of the year.

But one unresolved issue is the fate of eight people acquitted of charges
and three others who have served their sentences, and who are now living as
virtual prisoners in a safe house in Arusha. They are under constant guard
and say they cannot return to Rwanda.

“I humbly appeal to representatives of governments here present to see how
you can take this international responsibility by accepting to relocate the
acquitted and released persons,” said Tanzanian Vice-President Gharib Bilal.

“On different occasions, the ICTR has approached your governments to accept
relocating those individuals but in vain,” he added.

ICTR registrar Bongani Majola said the uncertain fate of those acquitted and
released was casting a shadow over the record of the court, which is due to
close on Dec.31.

“One failure of the ICTR from which lessons can be learnt relates to its
inability to help those acquitted... leave Tanzania and go away to live
their normal lives,” he said.

“It is evident that their situation presents a significant human rights
challenge that cries out for the assistance of the international community,”
he added.

Mieux encore, ils doivent être dedommagés pour avoir été emprisonnés
injustement comme ça se passe dans la justice occidentale.
