Who remembers these defunct restaurant chains?

The Grind

Like it or not, restaurant chains are a big part of American culture. No
matter where you are, you probably drove past a Friday's, an Outback
Steakhouse, or an Applebee's to get there.

But succeeding in the restaurant business isn't easy, and there are just as
many failures out there as there are success stories.

Let's take a look at some defunct restaurant chains that didn't manage to
make it to the top.

The Details

Howard Johnson's launched in the 1920's as a restaurant/hotel chain. The
company grew steadily along with American car culture, and by the mid-1960's
operated 1,000 restaurants throughout the country.

The franchise suffered a slow death in the following decades, selling off
the hotel portion of the business and shutting down restaurants. As of
today, there is only one Howard Johnsons' still in business.

White Tower was one of many imitators to open up shortly after White Castle
became popular. Owner John Saxe copied White Castle's menu, advertising,
style, and architecture. Saxe managed to open 230 White Towers before a
lawsuit from White Castle forced him to make changes that ultimately
destroyed the business.

Bennigan's was one of America's very first spots-bar/casual dining chains,
but it failed to keep up with competitors like Chili's, Friday's, and
Duffy's.

The chain was sold several times before filing for bankruptcy in 2008. With
new ownership, Bennigan's is still in business with 23 locations throughout
the US.

Druther's began in Louisville, Kentucky in the 1960's as a fried
chicken/burger joint. You might remember it from the slogan "I'd ruther go
to Druther's restaurant."

The Druther's mascot was a giant bee named Queenie Bee, which earned the
restaurant the nickname "Burger Queen." Druther's collapsed many years ago,
but there is one location remaining today in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
