FYI, my company has been using the open-source tool RetroWeaver (http://retroweaver.sourceforge.net) to translate our Java5-compiled class files to Java 1.4. We've had no problems with it. This lets us use all the Java5 features and still provide Java1.4 class files to customers who need them. It's an option to consider.
