short summary: In order to use JAPE, we have to migrate first the bridge written by the GATE team to Apache UIMA, then to convert UIMA types to GATE types, and may be to deal with performance issues. There are at least two projects for developing rule-based IE systems based directly on UIMA annotations: 1. Textmarker (http://tmwiki.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/), the software has alpha version 2. IBM LanguageWare (http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/lrw) IBM LanguageWare seems to provide potential for using syntactic information (i.e., dependency parsing) for rule definition.
