ripe atlas probes allow you to do user-defined tests, trading credits for
tests, credits build up over time by having it plugged in, you can do some
pretty advanced stuff if you get clever with the system.  Seems to be used
for DNS root reachability tests a lot, from casual glancing at my pflog
face .

it's  nice handy community thing to run even if you don't currently intend
to use it, just share a trickle of bandwidth (configurable, i think mine is
8kb/s or something)

gives a nice warm feeling inside. I just give one it's own v4 IP and have
it pf'ed off from my inside so minimal risk. You don't have to share the
probe publicly, aiui, so can be used with limited mutuality testing or
multi-site stuff.

ISP or domestic endpoints are just as valid
