If you are looking for a personal lab; have a look at the Juniper Firefly
virtual SRX offering:
http://www.juniper.net/us/en/products-services/security/firefly-perimeter/#evaluation

It is good for most things, can be run on a VM and will use much less power
/ make less noise than a M series (assuming you already have a server to
run the VM on).
