10GBASE-LR works over 1m of SM, and probably OM3/OM4, too.  So why buy
two types of optics for long & short reach?

Answer: because the "short reach" optics are cheaper. But why do they
exist if the "long reach" ones work over short distances?

That's the point Brandon's trying to make; why do we have two sets of
standard, when every new generation of Ethernet begets a new
generation of MMF.

Wouldn't it be better if we didn't have multi-mode standards any more?
