Small update (been rather busy with house rennovations in the mean time). I loaded a 15.4 image I had laying around, and so far 1 week and 3 days later, no issues.
Same VDSL firmware, so it would seem to be something in IOS 15.6 (or the particular release I had) messing with DNS. Will play around a bit more, looking for ALG options that I might be able to disable perhaps.
