a few suppliers could, pretty much yes, but inside it would be loads of
opensource. Desirable? You decide!

If you are a service provider then you need to be secure, what choice you make
to do that is yours, be it opensource or other direction; it’s a cost of being
a service provider – this is increasingly a big topic for customers and the way
I see this going (personal view) is that no matter your size TSR is going to
have in impact.

Neil.

Hi,

I get a sense that most small ISPs will be using standalone open source (FOSS)
tools such as Wireshark, pmacct, cacti, nagios et Al …

At the top end – BT, Sky, Talk Talk have the £££ to integrate a mix of COTS and
mature FOSS tools together.

Is there such thing as a COTS ISP infrastructure ? Can Cisco really sell you
everything you need, integrated together, and with the flexibility to
differentiate, with no Wireshark, named, quagga/zebra or similar ?

I’m not sure how you could run an ISP without *some* of the mainstream open
source software tools.

Thanks

John

Indeed, been both running NetBSD and Linux since before version 1. They are all
great platforms but need to be managed properly.

I was thinking the same, and that reminded me I'm getting a free bus pass this

Best open source: GNU. And BSD. Been using them for decades.

The list will be long, but just beware with new TSR stuff coming down the road
– keeping it secure is going to be a bigger factor that it once was (and quite
rightly so).

Morning All,

Quick question to the community; I’m wondering what kinds of open source
software folks are using out there and what you’ve used and found useful/not
useful over the years.

I use various pieces, such as:-

• Many Raspberry Pi’s as jump boxes

• Network Weathermap

• Nmap

• Ntop

• Elasticsearch

• Wireshark

• Etc..

What are others using and finding useful?

Best, Leigh
