Thank you for the response.

The problem actually wound up being in the client side text box.  It had 
been created with a seperate key listener on it, that happend to be 
looking for a key pressed event, and was then triggering the second key 
listener.  Very messy, but I guess you get that sometimes with collective 
code ownership.

But thank you for the avice and tools that I can use  in the future.
