Strabane & Lifford Petty Sessions

The usual fortnightly Petty Sessions court was held here yesterday
before John COCHRAN Esq. J.P. (chairman.) and T. W. D. HUMPHREYS Esq.,
J.P. The business of the Court was considerably increased by the
fruits of the races, which passed off but a few days ago. There were
close on 100 cases entered for hearing, a large number being for
drunkenness.

Assaults

Acting-Constable M'GOVERN summoned James CRUMLISH of Raphoe, for being
drunk and after being brought to the 'Strong Room' of the police
barrack, having assaulted a prisoner confined in the same place. Fined
10s and costs.

Sub-Constable MAGUIRE summoned Thomas KELLY, Londonderry, for
assaulting one of the riders on the race-course on the 27th ult. The
evidence went to show that after the horses had passed the winning
post, KELLY, coming 2nd, as he was passing the winning horse at the
pull-up, struck the rider across the face with his whip, blackening
his eye. KELLY did not appear and was fined £1 and costs.

Coustable DRURY summoned Denis GREESON, Ballyshannon for assaulting
KELLY at the same time and place. It appeared that the winning horse
was GREESON’s, and having felt annoyed at KELLY having struck his
rider, assaulted KELLY. The Worships having considered that KELLY got
some slight provocation, fined him only in 2s and costs.

The same complainant summoned John M‘ANAW, Strabane for having
assaulted a person in his view on the 29th ult. The case was proven
and he was fined in 5s and costs.

George HURST Esq. S.I., summoned Charles GORMLEY, a licensed
publican, for assaulting a man in his own house without any
provocation. GORMLEY in defence, said that the man he assaulted had
previously dragged Mr. DONNELL of Bailee, through the fire and that it
was for that, he pushed him. He was fined 1s and costs.

Constable DRURY summoned James KIRK, Ballymagory, Patrick M'MULLIN,
Artigarvan and Thomas DOHERTY, Artigarvan, for having assaulted and
beaten each other on the 25th ult. in Charles GORMLEY'S public house.
GORMLEY was examined in support of the charge and proved that M‘MULLIN
and DOHERTY were fighting inside the room and that KIRK was keeping
the room door closed, so as to prevent any person getting in. The
fighters were well beaten. The walls were bespattered with blood. They
were each fined £1 and costs.

Thomas KEAN, Strabane, and Anderson DOBSON, of Strabane, were summoned
for assaulting each other on the public street. This case was before
the Court on last Sessions day, but owing to DOBSON'S state of health,
he could not appear. The case was then adjourned to yesterday.
Constable DRURY conducted the case for the prosecution. The case
having been called, the constable handed in a medical certificate
which clearly showed that DOBSON was badly beaten on the occasion. The
constable also stated that he proposed withdrawing the case against
DOBSON, as he learned he was not in fault. DOBSON was then sworn and
proved to the nature of the assault and that he endeavoured to get out
of KEAN'S road but he could not. KEAN was ordered to be imprisoned for
2 months, with hard labour and to find sureties to keep the peace for
12 months or in default to be further imprisoned for 3 months.
