I am researching my family history and hope someone might be able to assist. I am a 6th generation Tasmanian (Australia), once known as Van Diemans Land and the destination of so many Irish convicts. My 3xG grandparents were from County Tyrone. My ggg-gmother was Ann Forbes (nee Eakin/s) DOB approx 1817, married to William Forbes DOB unknown. After her husband’s early death, Ann was convicted of several minor offenses, the last went to trial 10th October 1849. The location Dungannon is mentioned on her charge sheet but it is unclear in what context. It’s possible that this was where she was tried, and perhaps where she lived. Ann is noted as a Protestant, and illiterate. She was sentenced to 14 years transportation and spent approx 12 months in Grangegorman with 2 children, Isabella (DOB approx 1838) and son William (DOB approx 1840). It is understood there were other children, but these two were transported to Van Diemans Land with their mother onboard the Duke of Cornwall, arriving October, 1850. The child Isabella is my direct ancestor. I have excellent data for what befell this family after they arrived here in 1850, but have almost no info at all on their lives prior to Ann’s conviction. Hope some information on either Ann or William Forbes might be available through this group. Even a referral elsewhere would be most welcome.
