Hello all the following is "A Sad Occurrence at Castlederg - School Teacher Killed" 21 June 1904
On Saturday morning an accident occurred a couple of miles from Castlederg which resulted in the death of Mr. Joseph WHITTON, master of Clare National School. It appeared that about 8o’clock Mr. WHITTON was bringing milk to Arbarron Creamery. He was leading his horse and it became restive and commenced to plunge. The only person on the road was Arthur LYTTLE, Mr. John CROCKETT’s servant man who was coming from the creamery. He saw the horse plunging; immediately Mr. WHITTON was knocked down and the cart passed over him. As soon as LYTTLE got up he found the unfortunate gentleman quite dead. The wheel of the cart crushing over his breast, breaking the left arm and fracturing the skull. Dr. LOVE was sent for, but all he had to do was to pronounce life completely extinct. The news of the melancholy occurrence rapidly spread through the town and district producing an impression painful in the extreme. Mr WHITTON was well known and highly respected. For 40 years he had been teacher of Clare School and intended on retiring on pension at the end of June. He was an elder of 1st Castlederg Presbyterian Church and as secretary to the congregational committee took an active part in all church work. His services in connection with the erection of the church and manse will long be remembered. His death has caused a widespread feeling of regret and general sympathy is felt with his relatives in their sad and painful bereavement. The deceased, who was about 65 years of age, was unmarried. On Saturday evening Mr. John ELLIOTT, coroner for the district, held an inquest on the body.
