Extract of a letter to the Editor of the Saunders Newsletter from the county of Fermanagh, Nov. 12 1789
I am certain you will be pleased to hear that Laurence PEEBLES of Lisnaskea, in this county, against whom examinations have been lodged, as aiding and assisting his brother, John PEEBLES, in several robberies, and particularly in a late daring attempt to break into the house of Mr. CLARK in the county Cavan, was apprehended on Tuesday last. Two of the sons of Major BROOKE having taken the hounds as far as Lisnaskea, a gentleman of the party, who knew PEEBLES, saw him at work in a potatoe field, with a gun by his side, on which the whole party went to the neighbouring gentleman and there furnished themselves with arms, returned to the field in a full gallop with the huntsman and hounds at their head and coming up to PEEBLES, desired him to surrender, which he refused, at the same time endeavouring to escape, leaping over 2 large quickset ditches, over which he was directly followed by one of the the Mr. BROOKE’s, by him overtaken and kept at bay, until the rest of the gentlemen came round; when surrounded, he presented his gun and fortunately missed fire; upon which he was fired on by Mr. John KING of Drumgoon and instantly after by both the Mr. BROOKEs, by which shots he was severely wounded; he was then seized Mr. John BALFOUR of Drumcrue and being properly secured, was immediately taken to and lodged in the jail of Enniskillen. transcribed by Teena _______________________________________________ [email protected] UlsterAncestry Mailing List Searchable Archives: https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ http://lists.cotyrone.com/mailman/listinfo/ulsterancestry Website: https://cotyrone.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CoTyroneIrelandGenealogy/
