The learned recorder, in pointing out the duties of the Market jury, quoted from the Act of Parliament to the following effect "Such juries are hereby empowered and required to visit the markets, work-houses, shops &c., where provisions are sold or exposed for sale and inspect the quality of such provisions and victuals and in case such jury, or any one or more of them, shall find any unwholesome or bad provisions or victuals fraudulently or illegally made up, they are empowered to seize such and the person or persons exposing the same to sale, or claiming to be the owner thereof, and to carry such provisions and victuals, and such person or persons, before the chief Magistrate, who is empowered to dispose of such according to law. The Market jury or any one or more of them, have also full power and authority to examine bread for sale in the several shops or bake houses and also the several weights and measures in said City, and if any such bread shall be found illegally or fraudulently made, or any of said weights or measures deficient in, or less than, the standard weight or measure, to seize and to carry the same to the chief Magistrate of said City &c. It is also enacted that if any Market Juror shall refuse or neglect to execute the said office, he or they, are liable to a fine, not exceeding £4 for every such offence.” "Gentlemen," continued his worship, "it is unnecessary for me to detain you longer; you know your duty; the citizens expect much from your exertions and I am satisfied you will not disappoint their expectations." Thomas CALLAGHAN indicted for waylaying and assaulting James DICK, Robert DICK Sr. and Robert DICK Jr., near the lunatic Aasylum 13th Nov. last, were put to their trial. James DICK was the first witness, and deposed, that the evening said in the indictment, (rabble Wednesday) he was proceeding home from the market of this City, in company with his father and brother; when near the lunatic asylum, about 4:30 in the evening, they were set upon, knocked down and beaten, by a number of men, who suddenly rushed on them from behind, without saying a word; did not then know any the men, but recognised the prisoner (CALLAGHAN ) when he saw him again; witness got 3 severe cuts in the head and was confined in bed for 3 weeks after. Cross-examined - Heard one of the McDERMOTTS, who were neighbours, say that it was them that had got them (the prosecutors) the beating. Robert DICK jr. and Robert DICK sr. (the brother and father) corroborated what the last witness had sworn Maria CARMICHAEL - was returning home that evening; saw the fighting, she thought it was, on the road; saw 2 of the men go into a field; they did not leave her sight until they went out on the road again, after which they passed her, and spoke to her brother, who was behind witness; the prisoners were the 2 men she had seen at the beating, and afterwards on the road. (Before leaving the table this witness told the Court that she was afraid to home, from the threats which had been made against her since she came to Derry.) All the witnesses said that the prisoners were strangers, from near Fahan and the DICKS believed that they had been hired by the McDERMOTTS, who were their neighbours, as they (the McDERMOTTS) had boasted. The jury, in 5 minutes, found the prisoners guilty. The learned recorder, in passing sentence, strongly remarked on the crime of waylaying, which, of late, has been common in this neighbourhood and the circumstance of persons being found lost to all human feeling, as to be induced to lay in wait for and so dreadfully beat, persons who had never done them an injury. He then sentenced the prisoners be imprisoned 9 months and kept at hard labour. John KERNAGHAN and Philip LYNCH for an assault on Henry BROOKINS at Ballyarnett, 7th May last. 3 months hard labour. James KELLY, John FINLAY and Elizabeth NESBITT for stealing a shawl out of the shop of James MACKY of the Diamond. To be imprisoned each 6 months and kept to hard labour. George KANE for an assault on George KIRKPATRICK at Glendermott. - To be imprisoned 1 week and kept to hard labour. Daniel KERR for an assault on James TONER, this city - To be imprisoned a fortnight and kept to hard labour. John M'LARKEY, for an assault on James M‘GUIRE, Waterside.- To be imprisoned 1 month and kept to hard labour. Samuel M'BAY, John STEEN and Alexander and John IRWIN were acquitted of a riot at the Hillhead, on 26th Dec. last. The St. Columb Steamer A really splendid new steamer has been added to the number already plying from this port, by the Londonderry and Glasgow Steam Packet Company. She is called the 'St. Columb' and was built Mr. WOOD of Glasgow; the engines by Mr. NAPIER. She arrived at the quay on Thurs. morning and sailed again yesterday. Her accoromodations for passengers are very capacious and the cabins are equal, if not superior, to those of any other steamer belonging to the port. The main cabin is particularly beautiful. She registers 17 tons more than the 'Foyle'; is propelled 2 very powerful engines and is to take the place of the 'Londonderry', which vessel to be immediately sold. Game Notice is hereby given that the Game on Lord Castlestuart's estate in the Manor of Hastings, (Castlederg Co. Tyrone) is preserved and any person found trespassing thereon in pursuit of Game will be prosecuted as the law directs. All former permission is withdrawn.
