24 Oct. 1839 deaths
Saturday last, at the advanced age of 86, Mr. John STEEL, of this town, (Enniskillen) who, during his long life maintained the character of an honorable and upright man, a worthy member of society, and a charitable and benevolent christian. He bore the commission of lieutenant of the yeomanry of this town and was esteemed for his steady conservative principles, which, however deeply implanted in his heart, were never brought into view so as to wound the feelings of others. Respected as he was through life, his demise was marked by a general regret on the part of the inhabitants, the entire of the respectable shops, being, wholly, or partially, closed on the occasion. The death of this worthy citizen, although from his weak state and advanced age it might be shortly expected, was sudden and somewhat awful. He had just registered his vote before the assistant barrister, when he drooped forward and expired in the arms of those who surrounded him. His remains were accompanied to the place of interment at Irvinestown by a large concourse of the inhabitants, where after the usual church service an elegant and well conceived funeral eulogium to his merits and his memory was delivered by Rev. Mr. DEERING. On the 6th inst., at his house in Belfast, Mr. Samuel WILTON woollen-draper, after a few days illness, aged 39 years. On the 7th inst. in Newry. Wm. BROWN Esq. M.D. surgeon of the 52nd Light Infantry. On the 11th inst. at Crieve house, Ballybay, Joseph CUNNIGHAM Esq. deservedly regretted for his many amiable qualities. At Ballyshannon, Miss BRIEN, daughter of Doctor BRIEN of that town. Oct. 17th at Ballyjamesduff, county Cavan, in the 21st year of her age, Elizabeth, wife of Mr. John O'RIELLY and niece of the Rev. J. FARRELLY Oct. 13th at her house, Ranfurley Terrace, Dungannon, Martha, daughter of the late James GALBRAITH Esq. of Rascavy Co.
