22 Mar. 1827 Cavan Assizes The Hon. Justice JOHNSTON arrived at Cavan from Longford, this morning, about 11 o'clock and opened the commission at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, when the grand jury was sworn; but running over the grand panel he could only get 19 persons to serve. It was occasioned from the great quantity of snow which had blocked up the roads and which prevented the attendance of the foreman and tire High sheriff had to employ about 400 men to clear the circuit road for the judges.

Mary GAFFNEY and Thomas SHERIDAN for picking pockets. Not guilty. Christopher PALLACE for robbing John REILLY of £7 at Ballyjamesduff, 25th December last. Guilty, to be imprisoned 6 months. Owen LYNCH for stealing a pig. Not guilty. Mary GERAGHTY for stealing clothes, the goods of Michael ROONEY at Virginia on the 7th January last. Guilty, to be imprisoned 2 months. Catherine KEELAGHAN, otherwise CONWAY for stealing fowl. Prosecutor dead. Rule of bail £10 each. John CLARKE for robbery at Ballyjamesduff, goods of Catharine M'DANIEL. No prosecution. Discharged. Eliza M'TEAGUE and Judith M'TEAGUE, otherwise BRADY, for murdering an infant child, by strangling with their hands round the neck. Guilty of manslaughter. To be imprisoned 1 year each. Bernard TIERNEY and Stephen M'DONALD for the murder of Francis SMITH, by stabbing him with a pitchfork in the face. No prosecution. Patrick PENDERGAST for burglariously entering the house of Thomas GUMLEY at Drumgallan and stealing thereout a sword and bayonet, the night of the 15th July last. Guilty. To be hanged on Tuesday 27th instant. John DIVINE for passing counterfeit coin. Not guilty. John NUGENT for same offence, submitted. To be imprisoned 6 months. Pat BRADY for assault on Mary MAGUIRE with intent to commit a rape. No prosecution. William SHAW for robbing Mr. FREEMAN. Guilty. To be imprisoned 3 months. Alexander ORR for picking pockets. Not Guilty. William SHERIDAN for assault and attempt commit a rape on Anne SHERIDAN. No prosecution.
