Shocking Murder at Augher
On Monday last, a bench of Magistrates, consisting of J.C. MOUTRAY,
Rev. Francis GERVAIS, and Stuart MULLIGAN, coroner of the County
Tyrone, assembled at Augher, pursuant to an adjournment of an inquest
from the proceeding day in order to investigate the circumstances of a
murder committed on Owen CAMPBELL of Beltony. The jury, being
previously sworn at the house of the deceased and two surgeons in
attendance, a detail of evidence was given, from which it appeared
that deceased was returning from the fair of Augher on 12th May last,
in company with his brother Thomas CAMPBELL, when they were violently
attacked by a party of sanguinary ruffians. Thomas was the first
assaulted and battered in an unmerciful manner when Owen, coming to
his assistance, was knocked down with a huge weapon and beaten with
stones, until he was apparently lifeless on the road. His skull was
fractured dreadfully but he lived in great agony until Saturday last,
when death closed his sufferings. A verdict of wilful murder was
returned against George GILLESPIE of Abel's bridge, Jame MANEARY and
others, yet unknown. CAMPBELL was a man of diminutive size, of mild
temper, and of such inoffensive disposition, as to be called "civil
Owen". GILLESPIE and MANEARY have both absconded.
