Belfast Commercial Chronicle

27 Apr. 1849 Emigration

The Powerscourt Estate Co. Tyrone

The trustees of this estate lately sent out by the 'Elizabeth' and
'Helen Thompson', from this port to New York, about 200 small farmers
and their families, who, being unable to support themselves on their
lands, in consequence of the failure of the potato crop, were desirous
to emigrate, but had not the necessary means. The trustees, through
Walter HORE Esq., the agent of the estates, gave instructions that
these poor people should be clothed, their passages paid, that they
should be amply provided with provisions and that each of them should
be given a sum of money in gold to meet their immediate wants on
reaching their destination. The wishes of the trustees were most
effectively carried out by Mr. Robert WILSON of Benburb, who came to
Belfast and engaged the passages of the parties, provided them with
everything necessary for the voyage and saw them comfortably berthed.
We understand that between thirty and forty others from the same
estate, will shortly be sent out in a similar manner.
