To restore some relevance to the list: For the hell of it, I decided to toss together a sample MythTV setup, using my desktop as the backend, and my wife's desktop as the frontend. The backend was running FC4, frontend was live-booting off KnopMyth.
Setup under FC4 is not terribly easy - you have to use Axel's FC3 repo, since he's only ported about half the RPMs to FC4. No big deal, just a few more lines in yum.conf. I'd recommend FC3 if I were going to do a from-scratch project this very moment. >From there, I just followed the directions at: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php The guy who wrote it is apparently the stable maintainer, so you can be reasonably sure he knows what he's talking about. His directions, in any event, produced a working backend. The only big change was adding a totally insecure MySQL hack of: $ mysql -u root mythconverg mysql> grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"%" identified by "mythtv"; mysql> flush privileges; You also have to sign up over at datadirect.zap2it.com if you want TV guide functionality (which, I should note, works quite well!). Next up on the docket was KnopMyth. It took me a while to realize that I had to replace all instances of 127.0.0.1 in my backend configuration to my "real" IP for KnopMyth to be able to connect. Once it did, though, everything worked reasonably well. I wasn't able to test too much, since Myth apparently expects your media to be NFS-mounted everywhere. IOW, KnopMyth is good for testing purposes, but it doesn't seem appropriate for everyday usage, at least in LiveCD mode. Too bad, but not so unexpected. I then kicked up the frontend on my own computer and did some more realistic testing: 1. MythDVD - works good. 2. MythVideo - didn't run it through much, but it handled my raw wedding mpeg with ease. 3. MythWeather - works good. 4. MythNews - works good. Surprised me when it followed links by using MythBrowser. 5. MythBrowser - works good. Unfortunately, I didn't have an antenna hooked up to try out the PVR-like features. My guess is that these work correctly. All in all, some good stuff. Setup is much easier than it was the last time I tried it (rather a long while ago), and if you toss enough time at it, you'll get it running. You'll probably want to consider putting together a solid directory structure for your media first, though. -DMZ On Wed, 2005-06-29 at 17:25 -0500, David W.
