Interesting.

I went ahead and ran memtest, no errors after nine passes.
Checked the entire hard disk with badblocks (read-only), nothing found.

Re-ran lilo, no change. In fact, it was gradually getting worse - had to boot from the install CD. Then uncommented "compact" in lilo.conf, re-ran ... and it's worked ever since. And it boots faster. This is all very weird but as long as it works.

BTW there's just about nothing that can be adjusted in BIOS on this machine! Can't even reduce the clock speed. Averatec has a BIOS update on their web site, but it's a .exe and I have no Windows system anymore. Note to self, there's a good reason for setting it up as a dual-boot machine.

Very odd, am getting the "crc error, system halted" on boot ... but only
sometimes. Assuming this is hardware, anyone know any good diagnostic
tools? Or maybe I need to re-run lilo or something. This is 2.6.10, not
that the kernel version should matter, I wouldn't think. Lilo 22.5.9.

Two things that I have seen cause this problem:

1) your motherboard BIOS has a bug - check for an update
2) you do not have the extra 4 pin plug from the power supply
plugged in to your motherboard, and sometimes there is not enough
power.
