I burn the images with something like

dd if=bare.i of=/dev/fd0

and the odd thing is that it seems to work on fresh floppies, and even
used floppies with MSDOS filesystems on them, but for some reason once
there's a boot or rootdisk image on it, and I dd a new one over it, I
get various i/o errors on write and/or when I try to boot from it.

Didn't think of using badblocks ... I prefer just to throw the damn
things out :) Maybe I'll give it a shot.
