Some of the features in the upcoming reiserfs, reiser4, seem very, very interesting.  It'd supposedly plugins based.  One of the plugins that Hans Reiser wants included initially is a compression plugin.  Given that HDs are slow and CPUs are fast, he claims that he gets nearly double the speed as without it.

Personally, I'm waiting for it to be included with the Linux kernel, then I'm buying a nice new HD.
