I'd say most lockups on linux when running "non-beta" code come from hardware. first off if you are overclocked, scale it back. Next run memtest. if that passes try compiling the kernel for a few times back to back. If it bombs out with an internal compiler error, it is 99.9% likely you have a bad cpu.
