it's one of those days I've run into a linux application that is just stunning: an SSH based filesystem.

The google filesystem was just cute, but i never found it to be very practical.

sshfs one is just way too good to not get one of those "applications of the week" awards on my books.

Check out http://fuse.sourceforge.net/sshfs.html

Install two packages as root, create a mountpoint (for you as user, not as root)
and as non-root you can then do

        sshfs apus.astro.umd.edu:/apus /n/apus
etc.

and,
        fusermount -u /n/apus

to umount it again. Really quite elegant.

On a side-note, i noted i got peak values reaching 760 kB/sec on comcast cable,
wondering if they had been sneaking in more speed.
