Hi all,

I'm organizing several one-day ski trips for during winter break.
Everyone is invited, and feel free to include people from outside the
Computer Science Department.

First, you do *not* need to know how to ski. Several graduate
students have volunteered to do some teaching for free, and
professional lessons are available at the ski slope. Also several of
the resorts offer snow tubing, no skill required, just hop on and slide!

Second, I've picked a couple serious cheap days to head out.
Beginners can learn for as little as $10, and you can snowboard (and
maybe even ski) for as little as $14. Contact me for details!

You can rent snowboards and boots from the campus for $12/day
(great
deal!). See http://www.crs.umd.edu/programs/outdoor/EqptRent.html
for details.

If there are several people interested in tubing, I'll plan a trip
specifically geared for tubing.

I'm currently planning three trips, one that's best for novices,
and
another more suited for intermediate/advanced skiers, and an
intermediate/experts day!

Thursday, January 5, 2006 - Learn to Ski Day - Whitetail Ski Resort
(best for beginning skiers)

Thursday, January 5, 2006 is Pennsylvania Learn to Ski day, 4-hour
sessions for beginners are only $10! Reservations will be required,
and are available starting 12/19/05.

Whitetail is the closest ski slope to the University, and features
south facing slopes (which are warmer/slower to ski). Whitetail also
has one of the best and widest bunny slopes in the area for first-
time skiers. The intermediate slopes at whitetail are o.k., but the
advanced terrain is somewhat limited. Whitetail also features some
of the best lit trails in the area. With one of the nicest lodges,
and some of the best food around, Whitetail is a fun place to start
out skiing. Driving time to Whitetail will be about 2 hours.

        Prices:
                Special Learn to Ski Package
                        (4 hour - lift, rental, lesson 9am-1pm or 1-5pm,
reservations
required): $10

                8-hour Lift Ticket:
$43
                        Ski Rental:
$35
                        Snowboard Rental (@ resort):
$41
                        Snowboard Rental (campus):
$12
                        Lessons:
$30

Snow Tubing (2 hours, available 4-10pm only):
$15

Package prices are available (see: http://www.skiwhitetail.com/
rates.htm). If 20+ people want to buy *regular* lift tickets (not
the learn to ski package), we could get group rates which would drop
the prices. Since I will need to inform the resort ahead of time of
the number of people attending, please let me know if you intend to
join us.

Thursday, January 19, 2006 - Demo Day - Wisp Ski Resort (best for
intermediate skiers)

Thursday, January 19, 2006 is Ski Chalet's Demo Day at Wisp. $2
lift ticket vouchers are available! Tickets need to be purchased at
Ski Chalet before the event, and you must bring your own ski/
snowboard equipment to be eligible. Of course, you could rent a
snowboard from campus and use that to qualify :-)
More information is available at: http://www.skichalet.com/

Wisp is the only ski resort in Maryland, and is situated near Deep
Creek Lake in western Maryland. With a variety of terrain in mixed
difficulty levels Wisp is a good choice for intermediate skiers.
While the facilities are not exceptional, the prices are reasonable,
and the amenities are adequate.

        Prices:
Demo Day Lift Ticket (advanced purchase required):
$2

                        Lift Ticket:

                        Ski Rental:

$15

Monday, January 23, 2006 - Blue Knob Ski Resort

Classes start Wednesday, so what better way to end the winter
break
than tackling the toughest slope in the area. Blue Knob is located
in a PA state park, and has the best single day rates of any slope in
the area. Blue Knob also sports the longest run for novices in the
area(it's a bit tough for new skiiers in areas, but I've known a few
who made it their first day on skis). But the real attraction is the
wealth of expert runs, all steep, and many somewhat technical,
there's no tougher skiing within 4 hours drive than Blue Knob.
Rounding out the available choices is a large number of intermediate
slopes. These runs are mostly shorter, but can be technical
depending on conditions. The bad news, with the highest peak in PA,
the lodge situated at the summit can be very windy, and very cold.
Luckily, getting below the tree-line on the slopes leads to a much
more pleasant ski experience.

        Prices:

                        Lift Ticket:
$30
                        Ski Rental:
$23
                        Snowboard Rental (@ resort):
$35
                        Snowboard Rental (campus):
$12
                        Lessons (beginners only):
$15
Learn to Ski (lift, rental, lesson):
$60

                        Snow Tubing (5-9pm only):
$15

If 20+ people want to buy *regular* lift tickets (not the learn
to
ski package), we could get group rates which would drop the prices.
Since I will need to inform the resort ahead of time of the number of
people attending, please let me know if you intend to join us.

If you interested in any of these trips, contact me and let me
know:

                        Name?
Which day(s) you want to attend?
                        Ski, Snowboard, or Tubing?
Do you need to borrow any clothing or equipment?
Do you have equipment or clothing to loan out?
                        Are you willing to drive?

                                                                -Sandro
