They say it's windows/mac compatable, because they ship some silly software with the modem that I *think* only sets up the PPPoE username/password. (it certainly doesn't need to be installed.) the important thing is that they will only "support" mac/win, so if you call them with a problem and they figure out that you're running linux they'll refuse to help you. I'm pretty sure that you just need pppoe support in the OS, and set it up to supply the modem with the username/password so it can authenticate OK.

On a side note, verizon's DSL service sucks (speedwise, in my experience...) if it's $14.95 permanantly it might not be so bad, but i'm not sure if that's only for the first three months or not, and what speeds you get for that... $15 isn't too bad sheerly for the always-on aspect, but if the price goes up you'd probably be better off with something else. (check out CharmNet as Rich recommended, and if that doesn't float your boat, check out speakeasy.net.)

Hi;

I know it sounds lame, but I have never had anything but dialup at home
before.

I called up verizon and it sounds like they have a pretty decent deal
on DSL, but the sales person said verizon only support mac and windows.
She said they basically mail me a dsl modem.

I am running a copy of knoppix installed to my hard drive at home,
about a year old.

What do I need to know to get DSL running on it?

Do I need to install a firewall?  If so, what do I do?

All of this is totally new to me.

Thanks

Steve
