I've recently installed Ubuntu on my home PC, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting my external USB hard drive to work- perhaps someone on the list more knowledgeable than I can give me some pointers.

I think the USB drive should show up as some sd* device under /dev, but this doesn't seem to be happening. The results from dmesg when I unplug it and plug it back in indicate that the drive is at least being detected:
[4313453.265000] usb 2-3: USB disconnect, address 4
[4313459.692000] usb 2-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5 Apparently a problem is occurring somewhere between this point and when the entry in /dev should be added, but I don't know enough about how this is supposed to work to troubleshoot it. The drive works fine in WinXP, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. I also have a USB mouse that's working fine.

Any tips would be appreciated.
